The first of its kind of Unity Cup has kicked off in a grand style on Saturday 11th December at Christ the King central school field Isuaniocha in Awka North. The competition has 19 teams from Awka North and South constituencies.
The kick-off was performed by the sponsor Hon Chinedu Onwuaso (Mkponana) who represents Awka North and South Federal Constituency in the green chambers. He was represented by Bar Nnamdi Raphael who also doubles as the chairman of, local organizing committee (LOC).
In the opening game between Isuaniocha and Amansea, Isuaniocha won with 3 goals to nothing while Urum will take on Ebenebe today Sunday 12th December.
According to Bar Raphael the L.O.C Chairman, Hon Chinedu Onwuaso Unity Cup is to bring unity and peace to Awka North & South, and to hunt for talents and also create a source of empowerment. He promised that the scouts will pick good players, and the selected players from the Scouts will be taken to the next level, as Hon Chinedu has mapped out over 1million naira to be won. He urged teams, youth, and parents to allow their children to join the moving train.
Speaking to Sports Writers HRH Igwe Emeka Christian of Ebenebe, who was present while blessing the kola-nut, commended the sponsor for his humanitarian development which is the greatest development and advised people to emulate him as he has kicked off his unity and peace exercise which is one of a kind, Igwe Christian also commended the Organizers for a good job and thanked everybody that came out for the game.
The organizers gave out the Unity Cup branded kits from the sponsor to all the teams participating in the Unity Cup competition. And encouraged the large turn up of football fans who honoured the game with lots of refreshments and entertainment.
The day 2 of the Awka North & South Unity Cup match will continue today with Urum up against Ebenebe at Central School Isuaniocha, Mgbakwu against Ugbenu at St’ Joseph parish Ebenebe, and Amawbia against Isiagu at Paul University, Awka, all matches starts by 3:pm,
the day 3 match will see Awka play against Mbaukwu at St’ Matthew Anglican Church Nibo, and Awaba-Ofemili against Amanuke at St’ Joseph parish Ebenebe all matches start by 3:pm.
