
Immediate past president of the Senate, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki has lamented over the recent development in Oyo and Ondo states in which quit notices were given Fulani herders and subsequent burning of the property of the Fulani herdsmen in some parts of Oyo state. He said that such happenings have increased the tension and unduly raised the temperature in the country.
He said that the development is symptomatic of the continued threat to the unity of the country and called on everyone to work for peace and take initiatives that can douse tension. He lamented over the silence of key stakeholders in the country concerning the issues at hand , describing it as worrisome and an indication that something is wrong.
Calling for peace, he said that a United Nigeria is better for the entire world than a disintegrated country. He reminded all that any attempt at disintegration removed the cloak of importance around Nigeria in the global community.
Dr Saraki, who is also Wazirin Ilorin appealed to President Buhari to provide leadership at this critical time and take measures that will reassure all and sundry that he is working on the problems and work towards a United, peaceful and progressive Nigeria.
He further suggested that President Buhari should call all relevant politicians and stakeholders together, with former heads of states, security chiefs, traditional rulers and experienced youths with the technological know how to solve security problems in Nigeria .
He also called on Ahmed Lawan and Femi Gbajabiamila to provide adequate legislative intervention that will help the executive arm in the search for peace.
Furthermore, he called on politicians who are looking forward to take over power come 2023 to start pondering on the type of Nigeria they hope to rule over , especially if this situation persists.
He also cautioned Politicians and stakeholders against keeping quiet and waiting for election period to start making promises that won’t help anyone.
