Global terrorism deaths have surged by 11% in 2024, reversing nearly a decade of progress. This is according to the latest Global Terrorism Index. Attacks were recorded in 66 countries, with the Sahel region accounting for over half of the fatalities. The Islamic State remains the deadliest group, now operating in 22 nations.

In the West, lone-wolf attacks make up 93% of fatal incidents, while one in five terror suspects in some Western nations is under 18.

According to the report, terrorists are increasingly using artificial intelligence and encrypted communications to spread propaganda and recruit members. With threats escalating worldwide, countering terrorism remains a growing challenge.
