A group of women who go by the name, Nigerian Feminists, have demanded the National Human Rights Commission,NHRC to make known the findings on the alleged forced abortions on victims of insurgency.
The women , Chioma Agwuegbo, Fadakemi Akinfaderin, Leena Hoffman, Ifeoma Ikwueme, Azeenarh Mohammed, Nana Nwachukwu, Lola Okolosie, Omolara Oriye and Buky Williams, in a jointly signed statement, said that it is more than six weeks since Major General Lucky Irabor asked the NHRC to launch an investigation into these reports of forced abortions but nothing has been heard.
They asked the NHRC to make their plans to further investigate the accusation known to the public and conduct the investigation in a way that ensures there are no reprisals against survivors and witnesses of these human rights violations against women and children.
In December 2022, a report from Reuters alleged that the Nigerian military has conducted a secret , systematic and illegal abortion program on victims of insurgency in the North East .
The chief of Defence Staff, Lucky Irabor dismissed the report as outright nonsense but called on NHRC to investigate the allegations .
