The House of Representatives has called on Federal universities to immediately halt the implementation of fee increases, expressing concerns that such increases could lead to student dropouts.

During the plenary session on Tuesday, Hon. Aliyu Sani Madaki presented a motion titled “Call to Suspend the Implementation of Tuition Fee Increases in Universities.” Madaki highlighted the inadequate funding of Tertiary Education and the escalating inflation in the country. He alleged that federal universities nationwide had raised their tuition fees by 100 to 200 percent, while hostel fees had increased by 50 to 100 percent.

The House also expressed concerns that the fee hike could increase the already volatile situation in the country, with students issuing threats that may lead to an uprising against the Federal Government, causing severe consequences for the nation as a whole.

They emphasized that tertiary education is crucial for fostering development, reducing poverty, and enhancing the overall prosperity of any nation.

Therefore, House of Representatives called upon the Federal Ministry of Education to promptly reassess the newly implemented fees structure in Federal Government Colleges and revert to the previous arrangement.

Furthermore, the House urged the Federal Government to take immediate measures to ensure adequate funding for the education sector by increasing budgetary allocations to guarantee that Nigerian students have access to quality and affordable basic and senior secondary education.

Universities that have increased their fees include Bayero University, Kano (BUK), the University of Nigeria, Nsukka; the University of Uyo; University of Maiduguri; Michael Okpara, University of Agriculture, Umudike and Federal University, Dutse, among others.
