In a major development, the House of Representatives Committee on Constitutional Amendment has dismissed all 31 proposals for creating new states in Nigeria.
The announcement was made by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who revealed that none of the proposals met the constitutional requirements needed for consideration.
The proposals, submitted on February 6, 2025, were reviewed during a two-day retreat in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State. The event was organized by the 10th House of Representatives, in partnership with the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre and supported by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office.
Despite the rejection, communities now have until March 5, 2025, to revise and resubmit their proposals. Kalu also highlighted that 151 constitutional amendment bills are under review, aiming to tackle governance challenges across the country.
