Iran’s foreign ministry has summoned the Chinese ambassador in Tehran to protest a recent China-UAE statement concerning Iran’s sovereignty over three disputed Gulf islands, according to Iranian state media.
The islands in question—Abu Musa, Greater Tunb, and Lesser Tunb—have been claimed by both Iran and the UAE. Iran has controlled them since 1971, just before the formation of the UAE from seven Gulf emirates, which now has strong ties with Washington.
State media reported that Iran’s objection to the Chinese support of baseless claims in a shared UAE-China statement has been expressed to the Chinese ambassador in Tehran.
China, one of Iran’s biggest trading partners for the past decade, has found itself in the middle of this territorial dispute. Iran’s foreign ministry reiterated that three islands are an eternal part of Iran’s soil, and they expect China to amend its position on the issue.
