Veteran Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara has announced he will seek a fourth term in office, sparking political tension across Côte d’Ivoire. Critics argue the move violates the constitution, though Ouattara insists the 2016 constitutional change resets term limits.
The 83-year-old leader, in power since 2011, says his candidacy is legal and necessary to tackle ongoing economic and security challenges.
Opposition parties, including those of former leaders Laurent Gbagbo and Tidjane Thiam, say the announcement is undemocratic and accuse the government of excluding rivals through judicial rulings.
The presidential election is set for October 25.
