In response to rising insecurity, Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi has warned against calls for self-defence, saying it could plunge Nigeria into anarchy. He was reacting to comments by retired General Theophilus Danjuma, who urged Nigerians to protect themselves against bandits.
Speaking on Channels TV, Namadi stressed that citizens taking up arms would only fuel crisis, especially in farming communities. He cited Jigawa’s success in resolving farmer-herder clashes through dialogue.
Security analyst Bulama Bukarti also warned that self-defence could worsen the spread of illegal arms. Meanwhile, over 150 people were killed in fresh attacks in Benue and Plateau, prompting peace walks and urgent calls for federal intervention.
