Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja has announced her decision to recuse herself from the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
During a hearing on Tuesday, Kanu requested Justice Nyako’s withdrawal, accusing her of failing to follow the Supreme Court’s directives and expressing a lack of confidence in her court.
In response, Justice Nyako stated she had no issue stepping down and would return the case to the Chief Judge for reassignment. Kanu, who is facing terrorism charges, also criticized the court’s handling of his case, citing the Supreme Court’s judgment on jurisdiction issues.
Kanu has been in custody since his re-arrest in 2021, following his extradition from Kenya.
