The World Bank has raised concerns over Nigeria’s record N54.9 trillion 2025 budget, warning it may be overly ambitious and could force the Federal Government to resort to borrowing from the Central Bank.
Presenting its Nigeria Development Update in Abuja on Monday, the Bank noted that key budget assumptions—like oil production of 2.1 million barrels per day—are unlikely, given current output is just 1.6 million.
It warned that missing revenue targets may lead to deficit monetisation, which could derail Nigeria’s fragile economic recovery.
But Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Bagudu, disagreed, calling the projections modest and aligned with Nigeria’s growth capacity.
