The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has refuted claims that it warned Nigerians against eating bread.
In a statement made available on Tuesday by Prof. Christianah Adeyeye, the Director General of NAFDAC, the agency clarified that a recent video misrepresented the agency’s position.
NAFDAC confirmed that saccharine is not permitted in bread production under Nigerian and international standards.
However, the agency emphasized that it has not issued any advisories to consumers regarding bread consumption.
The DG said that the video in question inaccurately suggested NAFDAC had warned about saccharine use in bread due to rising sugar costs, advising consumers to avoid bread until further notice. But NAFDAC stated this was a personal statement by the reporter and does not reflect the agency’s position.
NAFDAC reassured the public that it remains dedicated to protecting public health and will take action against any baker found using unapproved additives. The agency also assured it is actively monitoring the food market to ensure the safety of products consumed in Nigeria.
