Report has it that women are twice more vulnerable to depression than men , as one out of every five Nigerians has experienced depression.
Speaking with The News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday, a Neuropsychiatrist at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital Calabar, Dr. Edak Okwong described depression as a major depressive disorder or clinical depression , a mood that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest.
He attributed the reason for more women falling into depression as a result of hormonal changes or fewer neurotransmitters such as serotonin in a woman’s brain, social issues where women are not empowered to settle which makes them anxious and depressed, domestic violence and the feeling of entrapment , among other things .
She advised people suffering from depression not to hide but to reach out and get help as the it is a treatable condition.
