A recent report revealed that nearly 50,000 international students who arrived in Canada in March and April 2025 failed to register at their designated schools.
Data from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada shows that this group accounts for 6.9 percent of the 717,539 international students being monitored. Among the unregistered, 20,000 students were from India, while 3,902 were from Nigeria, and 2,712 were from Ghana.
Despite this, 89.8 percent of students are confirmed enrolled, with some 23,500 students’ statuses unrecorded. Concerns have arisen over students working in low-wage jobs or being exploited by fraudulent institutions. In response, stricter regulations, introduced in November 2023, are now in place to address these issues, including potential sanctions for non-compliant institutions.
Immigration Minister Marc Miller emphasized the need for stronger oversight in light of smuggling networks and the ongoing global migration crisis.
