The Federal Government has been encouraged to try locally produced drugs from renowned Orthodox and unorthodox medical experts to check the effect of COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking to newsmen, former President of the defunct Onitsha

Markets Amalgamated Traders Association, OMATA, High Chief Gilbert Obi, said the cure for COVID-19 can be found locally

Chief Obi said he had continued to advise times without number that Professor Maurice Iwu, a professor of Pharmacology and one time Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, who claimed he has drugs that will cure COVID-19, should be tried, but that the Federal Government seems to have turned its back against the claim may be because Iwu is of Igbo extraction.

He noted that Maurice Iwu had asked the government to send COVID -19 positive patients to him if it is in doubt of the efficacy of his drugs.

The former OMATA President also observed that there is this other man from Irish hospital in Lagos, that said it also has the drugs and even challenged the Federal Government to also send COVID -19 positive patients to him for treatment.

He wondered what drugs were used to cure those that were cured of the disease and expressed dissatisfaction with the way government is handling the issue.

He predicted that economic recession might  descend on the country, post COVID-19, if proactive measures are not put in place now, observing that majority of the nation’s income comes from oil, which has kept dropping in the international market.

The business mogul warned that if much was not done, it will take the country 20 years to recover, listing other challenges facing the nation such as herdsmen attack, Boko Haram, armed banditary, among others, regretting that government is not doing anything to save the situation.

Contributing, the Onitsha Zonal Chairman of National Association of Traditional Medicine Practitioners, NATMP, Dr Ferdinand Okolo, also advised the government to try Professor Iwu’s drug.

He found it funny that Federal Government welcomed that of Madagascar when their own son, Professor of pharmacology and former INEC chairman claimed he has the solution.
