The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, has been arrested by security operatives at the Abuja airport. Ajaero was about to board a flight to the UK for a Trade Union Congress meeting when he was detained.
The NLC has strongly condemned the arrest, describing it as a brazen act of lawlessness and intimidation. In a statement, the union said Ajaero was detained without any legal warrant or formal instrument, even though he is not a fugitive from the law.
The NLC has put its affiliates and allies on alert, demanding Ajaero’s immediate and unconditional release. They have also called on the international community to take note of the rising wave of authoritarianism in Nigeria.
The reasons for Ajaero’s arrest remain unclear, but the NLC insists it is an attempt to silence dissenting voices and opposition in the country. They warn that the detention is an affront to democratic rights and the rule of law.
The arrest of NLC President Joe Ajaero has sparked outrage, with the labour union vowing to resist what they call oppressive tactics by the government. They are demanding Ajaero’s release and an end to the harassment of labour leaders and citizens exercising their democratic rights.
