A proposed bill aimed at amending the 1999 Constitution to revise the educational qualification requirements for certain political offices has been temporarily withdrawn by the House of Representatives.
Introduced by Adewunmi Onanuga, the bill sought to establish minimum educational qualifications for gubernatorial, presidential, and other significant elective positions in Nigeria. Onanuga, representing Ikenne/Salami/Remo North Federal Constituency, Ogun State, argued during Tuesday’s plenary session that holding elective office should mandate a university degree or its equivalent, contrasting the current provision allowing candidacy with only a First School Leaving Certificate.
While some lawmakers, including House Leader Julius Ihonvbere, Babajimi Benson, and Kingsley Chinda, supported the bill, others, like Aliyu Madaki from Kano State and Ahmadu Jaha (APC, Borno), opposed the proposed alteration.
Disappointed by the divided opinions, Onanuga decided to withdraw the bill temporarily, expressing intent to garner more support among her colleagues before reintroducing it for consideration.
