NSF 2024: Anambra Wraps Up Sports Festival With An Award And 18 Medals, Wins Gender Equality Prize, And Sets Sights On Enugu 2026
Anambra State concluded its participation at the 22nd National Sports Festival (NSF) Gateway Games Ogun 2024 on a high note, clinching a total of 18 medals and receiving national recognition with the prestigious Gender Equality Award.
The state’s athletes secured 2 gold, 6 silver, and 10 bronze medals across a range of sporting disciplines, a result that drew applause considering the relatively small size of the contingent. Officials described the performance as spirited and encouraging, noting that limited numbers prevented wider participation in more events.
Leading the medal charge was Swimming, which accounted for five medals (2 silver, 3 bronze), indicating growing strength in Anambra’s aquatic programs. Wushu Kungfu emerged as the state’s best-performing sport with 1 gold and 2 silver medals, while Boxing maintained its reputation with 1 gold.
Further contributions came from Taekwondo 1 silver, 1 bronze, Karate 2 bronze, and Para-Athletics, which secured a silver medal highlighting the state’s dedication to inclusive sporting opportunities. Darts, Kickboxing, Scrabble, and Athletics each delivered one bronze medal to complete the medal tally.
The highlight of the tournament for Anambra, however, was the state’s recognition for Gender Equality in Sports, an award presented for maintaining a well-balanced representation of male and female athletes. This honor underscores the sustained efforts of the Anambra State Sports Development Commission in driving inclusive participation and uncovering young talents across the state.
Reacting to the results, sports officials and analysts commended the athletes for their resilience and determination. “This performance reflects only a fraction of our potential,” one official said. “With better preparation and support, Anambra can perform even better in future competitions.”
Many stakeholders have attributed the limitations in performance to inadequate funding and logistical constraints, which affected early preparation and team size. They emphasized the need for a stronger commitment to athlete development, training infrastructure, and welfare to ensure broader participation in future editions.
With the curtain now drawn on Ogun 2024, attention is turning to the 23rd National Sports Festival, set to be hosted in Enugu in 2026. Calls are already mounting for early planning and investment to position Anambra as a top-performing state, capable of surpassing its current achievements.
