Following his release from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, former Governor of Anambra state has explained why he was in a hurry to leave the country after his handover to the present Governor of the state.

In an interview with journalists, former governor Willie Obiano, through his lawyer, Patrick Ikwueto, SAN, said the governor was only rushing out to meet up with a doctor’s appointment in the United States. Ikwueto said that the former governor had no reason to run, as speculated by people, as he has family in the state and lots of other things to attend to but instead the nature of his ailment, which has not been disclosed to the public hitherto, needed him to be in the hospital for the final stage of Specialist Radiography for eight weeks upon his arrival at the health facility in Houston, Texas, USA.

Mr Ikwueto remarked that the governor has been receiving treatment for a certain ailment since June 2021.

He also said that governor had earlier obtained permission from the Federal Government to travel for his treatment, following the report that he has been placed on EFCC’s watchlist in November 2021 and was shocked he was blocked at the airport.

He also said that there is an ongoing engagement with the EFCC to release Willie Obiano’s travel documents so he could proceed with his health treatment.

Former Governor Willie Obiano was granted administrative bail from the EFCC on March 23 after spending 6 days in their custody.
