The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has demanded the withdrawal of a proposed bill that seeks to impose a six-month jail term or a ₦100,000 fine on eligible Nigerians who fail to vote in elections.

In a letter dated March 29, 2025, SERAP described the bill as oppressive and unconstitutional. The bill, titled ‘Act to Amend the Electoral Act 2022,’ aims to make voting compulsory nationwide.

SERAP argues that citizens have the right to choose whether or not to vote. Instead of criminalizing voter apathy, the group urges lawmakers to focus on electoral reforms, such as eliminating immunity for governors and ensuring fair appointments in INEC.

SERAP warns that if the bill becomes law, it will challenge it in court to protect democratic freedoms.
