A massive explosion rocked a petrol and liquefied natural gas station in eastern Rome on Friday, injuring 45 people, including 21 emergency responders. Two victims are in life-threatening condition, with one suffering burns over 55 percent of his body.
The blast, which occurred around 8:20 a.m. in the Prenestino district, followed a gas leak during a refueling operation. The explosion sent a fireball and thick black smoke into the sky, shaking windows across the city and prompting fears of a bomb.
Authorities credit swift emergency evacuation including a nearby children’s summer camp for preventing a larger tragedy. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni praised first responders for their heroic efforts.
