Tragedy struck in the Galkago community of Shiroro Local Government Area, Niger State, where a mining pit collapse has resulted in one confirmed death and several injuries.
Thirty individuals, including the site manager, remain trapped under the debris.
The collapse occurred on Monday afternoon, as confirmed by Abdullahi Baba’arah, Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency. Rescue operations are underway, but efforts are hampered by the presence of bandits in the area.
Authorities have deployed excavators to the site in an urgent bid to remove debris and rescue those trapped.
The site manager, identified as Ibrahim Isyaku, is among the 30 individuals still unaccounted for. Shiroro Local Government Area, known for its rich gold deposits, also faces significant challenges from banditry and terrorism, complicating rescue operations.
