The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) are set to reconvene on September 6 to continue discussions aimed at averting a nationwide strike by university lecturers. The decision follows a meeting held on Wednesday, which was called by the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman.
During the meeting, the government and ASUU agreed to form a new executive leadership of pro-chancellors and set up a joint committee, including representatives from ASUU, the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission, and the Ministry of Labour. This committee will address unresolved issues, particularly those involving unpaid salaries due to the implementation of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).
The meeting comes after ASUU threatened to strike due to the government’s alleged failure to meet its demands. The minister emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring that students remain on campus and that security in universities is enhanced.
