Plateau Govt. Injects Over N2bn Into Urban Water Project

The Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, says his administration has injected over N2.6 billion as counterpart funding into the Plateau State Urban Water Supply Project.

He disclosed this on Tuesday in Jos when he declared open, the 2nd Semester 2026 National Urban Water Sector Reform Project Coordination and Review Workshop, calling for stronger institutions and sustainable investment in urban water supply.

Mutfwang said, “As part of our commitment to the success of the Plateau State Urban Water Supply Project, the Government of Plateau State has so far injected over N2.6 billion in Counterpart Delivery”.

The governor, represented by his Deputy, Josepine Piyo, said the commitment demonstrated the state government’s determination to ensure that development interventions translated into tangible improvements in the lives of citizens.

“Our shared objective, therefore, must be clear: more reliable water systems, stronger institutions, better project delivery and, ultimately, more water flowing through the taps of ordinary Nigerians,” the governor added.

The two-day workshop, held in Jos, was organised by the Plateau State Government in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, Jos Water Services Corporation, National Urban Water Sector Reform Project and the French Development Agency (AFD) under the theme, “Improving Water Supply and Sanitation Services Delivery.”

Mutfwang said his administration considered water security a fundamental pillar of modern governance and human development, adding that the state was strengthening institutions, infrastructure and systems required to expand access to potable water.

He explained that ongoing interventions include the expansion of municipal reticulation networks, rehabilitation of the Yelwa Water Treatment Plant, reticulation of the Mangu Regional Water Scheme, as well as rehabilitation and construction of water infrastructure in Bokkos, Langtang North, Langtang South and Wase.

The governor further informed that the state was also rehabilitating the Yakubu Gowon Water Treatment Plant and Laminga Water Treatment Plant with support from AFD, while appealing to the agency to simplify administrative processes and expedite No Objection approvals to minimise delays in project implementation.

“The success of any reform programme is ultimately measured not by the number of meetings held or reports produced, but by the impact it makes on the lives of citizens”.

He, therefore, urged participants to use the two-day workshop to identify bottlenecks, share experiences and develop practical solutions for improved water services.
