In a bid to mop up supply of eggs in order to avert enormous loss, Plateau State has become the first state in Nigeria to purchase eggs in large quantities from Poultry farmers.
This was revealed by the state chapter of the Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) during the distribution of the mopped-uo eggs by the State Governor, Simon Lalong on Monday .
Gov .Simon Lalong said that the measure was designed to alleviate the plight of farmers caused by the recent egg glut in the state. Speaking through the Secretary to the state Government, Prof Danladi Autu said that the government would sustain the intervention by making them suppliers of eggs for the school feeding program.
The Governor also commended the farmers for contributing to the internally generated revenue of the state and added that his administration will do anything possible to secure Poultry business in the state.
Those that benefitted from the mop -up were charities and orphanage homes . The Commissioner for Agriculture , Dr Hosea Finangwai stated that schools, hospitals, correctional centers and orphanages in the state would be the first beneficiaries of the mop -up. The mop up is also expected to bring back who had left the business.
It was earlier reported that major poultry farms have dropped their prices and are encountering total losses. The egg glut is a situation where farmers churn out eggs daily but encounter low demands following the cash crunch.
