Report has it that Nigeria is wasting enough gas to power over three million homes. This is according to a recent report by the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA).
According to the report,in the first half of 2024, the country flared approximately 148.7 million standard cubic feet of gas, which could have generated 3,401 megawatts of electricity.
NOSDRA stated that this wasted gas, valued at around $360 million, could have been a significant relief to Nigeria’s ongoing foreign exchange crisis.
The flared gas shows the persistent challenges within Nigeria’s energy sector, where over 100 million citizens still lack access to consistent electricity.
Following the reports, energy experts stress the urgent need for gas commercialisation and stricter regulations to reduce flaring. They advocate for investments in infrastructure and the development of floating liquefied natural gas facilities to harness this valuable resource and enhance Nigeria’s power generation capacity.
