A former Director of the British Council in Nigeria, Mr. David Roberts, has urged Nigeria to reject the recent IMF report projecting a drop in the country’s economic ranking.
According to report, Roberts stated there is the need for Nigeria to rely more on its own statistical data rather than foreign agencies.
He highlighted Nigeria’s past achievement of becoming Africa’s largest economy in 2014, thanks to data from the National Bureau of Statistics.
He also questioned why Nigeria would accept a downgrade by the IMF when its economy is growing and improving in various sectors. He advised Nigerians to trust more in the NBS statistics and projections, citing past inaccuracies in IMF forecasts.
The IMF had projected Nigeria to slip to the fourth-largest economy in Africa due to currency devaluations and economic challenges.
