Senator Ifeanyi Uba Reiterates call For a free sickle cell free Society.

The Senator representing Anambra South senatorial Zone in the 9th Assembly , Distinguished Senator Dr. Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah on Friday, reiterated his commitment towards eradication of Sickle-Cell disease in the country. The Senator made this known during the official commissioning of the Sickle Cell Home and Center in Agulu.

Speaking at the event, the Anambra South Senator who also doubles as the Chairman of the occasion maintained that the welfare of Sickle-Cell patients as well as eradicating the disease in the country have always been his dream and priority. He further said that he has commenced a process of achieving them by presenting a Bill to that effect. According to him, the Bill to establish the National Center for Sickle Cell Anaemia Research and Treatment in Aguata which is being sponsored by him is aimed at promoting the wellbeing of sickle cell patients as well as promoting research aimed at finding lasting solution to the disease in the country. The Bill has since passed through first reading.

In her response, the founder of the Association of People Living with Sickle Cell Disorder (APSCLD), a non-governmental organization that caters for persons living with sickle cell disorder, Mrs. Aishatu Edwards Mmaduagwu commended Senator Ubah for taking the bold step.

According to her, the Senator has proven to be different from other politicians who only remember to do the right thing during election season. Mrs. Aisha who went furthrr to highlight the numerous support the Association has so far received from the Anambra South Senator including the gift of an Innoson vehicle, palliatives etc, urged other politicians to emulate his selflessness and passion for the wellbeing of the people.

She further disclosed that the home will serve as an orphanage for Sickle Cell disease patients as well as a home for the less privileged among them. Speaking on the need for the Sickle Cell Center which was also commissioned, the APSCLD founder said that it will serve as a multipurpose unit which shall be comprising of a counseling department and a sensitization unit.

Also present at the event include APSCLD members, traditional ruler of Agulu, His Royal Highness Igwe Ezeani Ezedinobi Obodoako III, President General of Agulu Town Union, Chief Andy Orakwelu, Former Secretary to the Ebonyi State Government, Prof. Benard Odoh, Roman Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Paulinus Ezeokafor, Prof. Chinyere Stella Okunna and members of the host community.
