The Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike says Governor Soludo’s administration is passionate about the health and wellbeing of Anambra women.

Dr. Obidike stated this during a sensitization programme on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) organized for the twenty-one local government supervisors, some traditional birth attendants and medical students held in Awka.

Female Genital Mutilation is the partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other injury to the female organs, for non- medical reasons.

Speaking during the event, Commissioner Obidike said that Governor Soludo’s administration is so passionate about the health and wellbeing of Anambra women and made it clear that his administration will do everything to end the ugly practice in the state.

Dr. Obidike urged the participants to take the programme seriously as well as utilize the knowledge they have gathered to educate their people in their various Local Government Areas, to ensure that the practice is stopped forthwith, as FGM has both psychological and physiological effects.

The State Coordinator of Reproductive Health, Dr. Uju Okoye said that the event will help them to develop a work plan that will aid the elimination of the practice, which she noted is still being done in Anambra East, Anambra West and Ekwusigo Local Government Areas.

A retired Director of Nursing Services in Anambra state Ministry of Health, Mrs. Uche Udeze in a lecture, listed adverse effects of Female Genital Mutilation to include pain, bleeding, acute urine, infections among numerous others and called for all hands to be on deck to end the ugly practice in Anambra state.
