Vice-President Kashim Shettima has emphasized the need for good governance in Nigeria rather than a change in the system of governance. Speaking at an event in Ilorin, Kwara State capital, Shettima stated that democracy can only survive through adherence to the rule of law and quality of governance.

Shettima also addressed the aftermath of the litigation that trailed the 2023 electoral process, stating that President Bola Tinubu never influenced the electoral process and that the presidency never used instruments of office to hunt or hound perceived opponents standing trial.

Former Minister of Works, Raji Fashola (SAN), also spoke at the event, suggesting that Nigeria once practiced a parliamentary system but failed, leading to an unwarranted disaster. He advised that the nation retain the present federal arrangement with calls for reducing excessive cost of governance rather than calling for a change in the system.

Fashola also blamed the call for a change of system on poor education, particularly in political history, and the lack of understanding of how a system works. He
emphasized that if people are not accustomed to how a system works, they will be frustrated and call for its change.

The event was attended by notable figures, including former head of state, retired General Abdulsalami Abubakar, who spoke on the topic of coups and their inability to succeed without the support of politicians.
