Prominent political figures in Nigeria have paid tribute to the late President Umaru Yar’Adua, 14 years after his passing.
Yar’Adua, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2007 to 2010, was remembered by his peers as a true democrat who deeply respected the rule of law and worked towards institutionalizing democracy in the country.
Former Senate President Bukola Saraki highlighted Yar’Adua’s focus on building strong institutions, saying that he worked towards it and that his legacy was founded on laws and best practices, not on the whims of men.
Other leaders, including former Governors Aminu Tambuwal and James Ibori, also praised Yar’Adua’s commitment to upholding the rule of law, fighting corruption, and fostering dialogue across all regions of Nigeria.
The current Governor of Yar’Adua’s home state of Katsina, Dikko Radda, also convened a prayer day to commemorate the late president’s memory.
Yar’Adua’s brother and current Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua described him as an exceptional leader and an icon of democracy whose passing was a tragic loss for the country.
