The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has raised concerns over the recurring collapse of major bridges in the North East region, attributing the issue to the effects of climate change.
The Commission’s Managing Director, Mohammed Alkali, made this statement on Friday while inspecting the aftermath of a recent flood that destroyed a crucial bridge in Namnai, Taraba State, connecting the northern and southern parts of the state.
With the bridge gone, commuters now rely on ferries, paying up to N5000 per bus to cross the river.
Alkali highlighted that the North East is the most affected region by climate change, leading to increasing pressure on both the government and residents.
Despite the challenges, Alkali assured that the NEDC would collaborate with state governments to develop long-term solutions to the bridge collapse crisis across the region.
He emphasized that climate change has made such collapses a frequent occurrence, calling for durable solutions.
