President Bola Tinubu has expressed that the best way to honor the late Professor Humphrey Nwosu, former Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), is by ensuring Nigeria’s elections remain credible, transparent, and democratic. Tinubu’s statement conveyed through his Special Adviser Bayo Onanuga, emphasized that honoring champions of democracy like Nwosu means upholding citizens’ rights to choose their leaders freely.
Professor Nwosu, who led the NEC from 1989 to 1993, was instrumental in the historic June 12, 1993, presidential election, later annulled by General Ibrahim Babangida. His innovative use of the OPTION A-4 system allowed voters to queue openly behind their chosen candidates, a method praised for its simplicity and transparency.
President Tinubu extended his condolences to Nwosu’s family and associates, remembering him as a courageous leader who played a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s democracy. He prayed for Nwosu’s soul to find eternal rest and comfort for those mourning his loss.
