Today Is May Day, Otherwise Known As Workers’ Day

Nigeria Today Joins Other Countries Of The World To Mark 2025 International Labour Day

International Labour Day, also known as International Workers’ Day, is observed every year to honour the hard work and contributions of workers across the globe.

Every year on 1st May, countries across the globe come together to celebrate International Labour Day, also known as May Day. This day is dedicated to recognising the invaluable contributions of workers and advocating their rights and welfare.

In 2025, the observance continues to underscore the importance of fair labour practices and the ongoing pursuit of social justice.

This year, the day is marked by various activities worldwide, including marches, rallies, and discussions aimed at highlighting workers’ rights and achievements.

International Labour Day History
The origins of International Labour Day trace back to the late 19th-century labour movement in the United States. On 1st May 1886, workers initiated a strike demanding an eight-hour workday. This movement culminated in the Haymarket Affair in Chicago, where a peaceful protest turned violent following a bomb explosion, leading to multiple casualties. This event became a symbol of the struggle for workers’ rights and led to the establishment of 1st May as a day of international solidarity.

International Labour Day is also a day to reflect on the current state of workers’ rights and conditions. It highlights the need for fair wages, safe working environments, reasonable working hours, and the elimination of exploitation. The day also emphasises the importance of unity among workers and the role of collective action in bringing about positive change.

Activities marking the day include parades, cultural programs, seminars, and social media campaigns that raise awareness about labour issues. The day also serves as a platform for policymakers, trade unions, and civil society to discuss and implement strategies aimed at improving workers’ conditions and ensuring their rights are protected.

The theme for this year’s Workers’ Day is… “Safety And Health Of Workers…. Digitalization And The Future Of Work.”
