A passenger train carrying 490 people derailed in a tunnel in eastern Taiwan early on Friday, killing at least 50 people and injuring several more.
According to the Central News Agency (CAN) – the government run media, the 8-car train which was traveling to Taitung city, came off the rails in a tunnel just north of Hualien on Friday morning, causing several carriages to hit the wall of the tunnel.
The train driver alongside over 50 people, were reported to have died, according to the fire department.
At least 69 survivors were also reported to be undergoing treatment in several hospitals in the surrounding Hualien County.
The government has reported that some of the dead are still awaiting identification, but believe that everyone trapped within the train’s heavily damaged carriages has been removed.
