Disturbed by frequent death of truck drivers at the wheel, the Corps Commander/CEO, Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, TRQCE, Commander Ogunyemi, has warned corporate organizations, especially truck owners, to stop overusing their drivers, to avoid sudden death caused by stress.
Commander Ogunyemi said management of companies should be able to hire drivers enough to manage their trucks, rather than using a few ones for the purpose of minimizing cost, adding that this usually results in over-stressing drivers who may slump and die while driving.
The TRACE boss dropped the warning on Monday, while reacting to three different incidents of manifestation of a clear case of stress, killing truck drivers by installments.
One is a sudden death of an unknown truck driver, early morning Monday, who slumped and died while driving in a traffic between Sango and Tollgate, Ota, in front of NNPC, Sango garage, while the second case is that of a driver who, driving under the influence of alcohol, parked his truck on the fast lane, and slept off, and the third, is a drunken tipper driver who rammed into two cars and seriously injured two occupants along Navy/Akeja road, all in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Council area.
According to an eyewitness who pleaded anonymity, the ill-fated truck driver drove a truck belonging to Cargo Express company, had earlier rested his head with hands on the steering during the traffic, but was suddenly noticed, did not move the truck at the easing of the traffic.
He said they even shouted at him and hit his truck for him to know the traffic is moving and he was causing go-slow at the back.
So that was when they realized the driver has actually slumped, not sleeping, and they rushed him to a nearby hospital where he was confirmed stone-dead, and the doctor confirmed he was over-stressed.
It was also gathered that the second drunken driver with iron loaded truck confessed to have drunk some sachets of alcoholic drinks, three of which was retrieved from him.
He was quoted to have said that he resorted to drinking to enhance the little energy in him and keep him awake from heavy sleep, thinking he had parked in the garage not knowing he was on the fast lane.
Commenting further Commander Ogunyemi said TRACE Corps is planning to meet with corporate organizations for the purpose of sensitizing them on the proper way of engaging and maintaining drivers for better result devoid of sudden death induced by stress.
