On the Foreign Scene

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Rwandan-backed M23 rebels have seized the strategic town of Kanyabayonga in North Kivu province.

This town, home to over 60,000 residents and many displaced by ongoing conflict, is a key location on the path to major commercial centers Butembo and Beni.

The M23, which resumed its armed campaign in 2021, now controls four territories in the province.

Local officials report severe desolation and fear among the population, with many having nowhere to flee.

Humanitarian operations have been suspended due to security concerns as clashes between Congolese forces and the rebels continue.
