Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine, on Friday claimed victory in the presidential elections, rejecting it as a “complete sham”.

According to media reports, this comes even as early results showed President Yoweri Museveni in a wide lead, as vote counting continues.

The 38-year-old former singer said his party’s polling agents were beaten and chased away in parts of northern and western Uganda, that ballot boxes were opened and stuffed, and that some voters were only given ballots for the parliamentary election.

Speaking to journalists, he posited that he was very confident that he defeated Museveni by far and called upon all Ugandans to reject, what he called the blackmail.

Wine went on to say he would announce his next strategy in coming hours, even as Election commission chairman Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama said he did not appreciate the assertion that the results being read out are rigged.

Later on Friday, Wine also alleged that the military besieged his home;
“We are under siege. The military has jumped over the fence and has now taken control of our home,” Bobi Wine, tweeted yesterday afternoon.

Current president Museveni, 76, is seeking a 6th term in office after 35 years in power, and is quite popular amongst the locals, remaining favourite to win the election.

The final election results are expected today.
