The United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed, met with Nigerian President Bola Tinubu at the Aso Rock Villa to discuss efforts to restore civilian rule in Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea, which recently experienced military takeovers.
Mohammed emphasized the UN’s support for the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in encouraging these nations to return to democratic governance.
She highlighted the need for economic development to prevent further suffering among citizens.
The discussions included recent sanctions and the mutual defense pact among Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali.
Mohammed clarified that the UN is not negotiating on behalf of ECOWAS but supporting its leadership and the focus remains on ensuring a transition back to democracy while addressing issues like terrorism, food security, and job creation.
