On the Foreign Scene
The United States Senate has passed the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) and the Children and Teens’ Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA 2.0) with a 91-3 vote on July 30, 2024. These bills, the first major internet safety laws for children in two decades, aim to protect minors from online risks such as bullying, exploitation, and harmful content.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer urged the House to pass the bills swiftly.
Despite strong support, the bills faced opposition over concerns about potential censorship and privacy issues. The House now has a tight deadline to review the legislation before the August recess.
