Chief Mrs Obiano enjoins widows to stop seeking self-pity
Widows have been enjoined not to wallow in self-pity, because they have lost their husbands.
Wife of Anambra State Governor, Chief Mrs Ebelechukwu Obiano, gave the advice in her message to an event to mark this year’s International Widows’ Day, which held in Awka.
International Widows Day observed on the 23rd June, every year, was set aside by the United Nations to draw attention to the plight of widows and seek ways towards addressing them.
Chief Mrs Obiano, Founder of an NGO, `Caring Family Enhancement Initiative, CAFE, pointed out that engaging in self pity can be destructive, as it makes overcoming adversities difficult, if not impossible and can keep one stuck.
The governor’s wife noted that these days, widows have better opportunities unlike in the past when they went through many debasing practices as a result of cultural inhibitions.
She encouraged them to detach themselves from self-pity and face the challenges of life.
The Governor’s wife represented at the event by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Social Re-Orientation, Mrs Mitchelle Onugbolu, noted that no doubt, the loss of a husband is usually traumatic for women especially, young widows but urged them to draw strength in the Lord and forget ahead.
According to her, government and NGOs are helping widows to outlive social isolation, economic challenges and grief, through skills acquisition programmes in order to grow stronger and better.
The governor’s wife commended founder of Virtuous Widows Association for bringing widows together to commemorate the day.
The key speaker of the event and Managing Director, National Light Newspaper, Sir Chuka Nnabuife, noted that widows are faced with enormous challenges in providing for themselves and their children.
Sir Nnabuife saw widows as spiritual beings that God will need to trust more because of their afflictions, and urged them to keep themselves holy and continue in supplication to God, day and night.
The Convener and founder of Virtuous Widows Association, Mrs Ifeyinwa Egbosiuba, said the NGO had been in existence for the past eight years, with sole objective of enriching lives of widows through empowerment and skill acquisition, and appealed for assistance.
