The wife of the Enugu State Governor, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, has launched the ‘Mama Care Initiative,’ a health insurance scheme aimed at reducing maternal and infant mortality in the state.
The initiative, in partnership with the Custos Care Foundation, has enrolled 1,701 pregnant women in a one-year health insurance program. This scheme provides comprehensive healthcare services, including antenatal care, safe delivery, and postnatal care.
Additionally, beneficiaries received financial support and foodstuffs, including 1,701 bags of rice.
Mrs. Mbah emphasized the importance of modern healthcare over traditional birth attendants, highlighting the need for safe and supervised childbirth conditions. The initiative ensures that women across the 17 local government areas of Enugu State have access to essential medical services.
The state Commissioner for Health, Prof. Emmanuel Obi, described the initiative as a significant milestone in improving healthcare for pregnant women and newborns. Beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the support, calling the program a game-changer.
