FCT Minister Nyesom Wike says wealthy Abuja residents are the biggest challenge to tax compliance in the capital.
Speaking during the inauguration of Zakari A. Kyari Street and adjoining roads in Katampe District, Wike criticized the elite for refusing to pay ground rent and taxes locally, while voluntarily doing so abroad.
“The big men in Abuja don’t like paying taxes. Yet, they pay ground rent in London and America without complaint. How rich is a city where people refuse to pay dues?”
He emphasized that critical infrastructure, like the new roads, were funded by responsible taxpayers in the FCT.
Wike warned that without tax revenue, development in the city would stall, asking, “How rich is Abuja if residents won’t pay their dues?”
