Women Wing of the Anambra State Trade Union Congress, TUC, recently

embarked on peaceful protest, awareness and sensitization campaign

against  high rate of rape and molestation of the girl child.

The Protest Walk took the women through Aroma Junction to the Jerome Udorji Secretariat in Awka.

The protesters carried  placards with  inscriptions such as, ”Government

Should Implement Stiffer Punishments For Rapists,”, “End Rape”, “Raise

Boys, Who Respect Girls”, “Women Are Not Sex Toys”, “No To Rape Is A

Collective Responsibility” among others.

Addressing the protesters, wife of the Governor, Dr Mrs  Ebelechukwu Obiano, who described rape as a heinous crime, frowned at some men, who rape women including small children, thereby exposing them to pains and agony.

The governor’s wife, represented by the Senior Special Assistant to

the Governor On Donor Agencies, Mrs. Mary Ogugua, said  the present

administration is committed  towards eliminating rape as well as  all other forms of violence against women.

She noted that through CAFE, she has positively touched many lives, giving them a sense of belonging and commended the union for embarking on such key awareness campaigns.

The State Head of Service, Barrister Harry Uduh, identified the

campaign as timely, noting that rape and violence against women are

now two major problems bedeviling the society, and pledged his total

support towards  the campaign.

The Commissioner For Children and Women Affairs, Lady Ndidi Mezue,

represented by the Head of Information in the Ministry, Pastor Nkiru Iloanya, also commended TUC Women Wing, for embarking on the protest, maintaining that her

Ministry will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that rape and all forms of violence against women are brought to the barest minimum in the state.

Okechukwu, as well as the State Chairperson of TUC, Comrade Nneka Nwankwo, called on leaders at all levels to enact laws with stiffer

penalties for perpetrators of rape and violence against women and children, to serve as deterrent to perpetrators.

they also commended the Governor’s wife for her numerous interventions

and assistance to women, children, and the  less privileged.
