The World Bank has raised alarm over the global impact of climate change on education, revealing that floods have displaced over 404 million students from schools between January 2022 and June 2024.

A report titled “Choosing Our Future: Education for Climate Action” links these school closures to severe weather events such as floods, storms, and heatwaves, affecting 81 countries, including Nigeria.

In Nigeria, recent flooding in Maiduguri displaced nearly two million people, forcing school closures. The World Bank is urging governments to act immediately, emphasizing that for less than $20 per student, schools can adapt to climate challenges and minimize learning losses.
