The World Health Organisation, WHO, has raised an alarm that a pandemic deadlier than the dreaded COVID-19 would soon hit the world.
This is coming amidst skeptism by some countries over the COVID-19 vaccine.
WHO, therefore, urged the world to prepare for the scourge, saying that COVID-19 is only a wake-up call.
The Head of the WHO Emergencies Programme, Dr Mike Ryan, who disclosed this at a press conference on Wednesday, said although the COVID-19 pandemic had been very severe, it was not yet “the big one.”
He said this is a wake-up call, pointing out that though people are learning, now, how to do things better, through science, logistics, training and governance, but that the planet is fragile.
WHO noted that people live in an increasingly complex global society, therefore, the threats will continue.
He further explained that COVID-19 pandemic has been very severe and has affected every corner of this planet, but that it is not necessarily the big one,
The COVID-19 pandemic has so far sickened 82.6 million persons worldwide out of which 1.8 million have died.
Millions of doses of the three effective vaccines that have been approved for preventing the infection are currently being distributed and administered in the US and Europe, while Africa and the rest of the world await supplies in the new year.
