The Senate will hold a two-day nationwide public hearing on July 4 and 5 to gather citizens’ input on the ongoing 1999 Constitution review.

Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin, who chairs the review committee, said the hearings will occur simultaneously in Lagos, Enugu, Ikot Ekpene, Jos, Maiduguri, and Kano, representing the six geopolitical zones in the country.

Over 50 proposed amendments are on the table, including local government autonomy, state police, gender equity, and judicial reforms. Bills for diaspora voting, new states, and traditional ruler councils are also under consideration.

The Senate says the process is aimed at reshaping governance through citizen engagement and national dialogue.

Barau described it as a democratic opportunity for all Nigerians to influence the country’s future
