In view of the heavy traffic on roads associated with the Christmas period, the Federal Road Safety Corps, Anambra state Command, says it will carry out a robust traffic management and control at strategic places, where heavy vehicular movements occur.
This is to help ease traffic congestions in all parts of the state, especially, at the Onitsha head bridge this Christmas and new year season.
The State FRSC Sector Commander, Mr Andrew Kumapayi, announced this during the official flag-off of 2020 Safety Campaign of RS5.3 Anambra Sector Command, at Onitsha head bridge, on Tuesday.
He said the robust traffic management and control activities would help to ensure that holiday makers and road users would not experience long hours of driving through gridlocks.
He noted that two camps, Onitsha and Nteje have been established for twenty 24-hours operation to tackle problems of incessant gridlocks at Head Bridge, Building Materials, Tarzan Junction and other traffic build up regions across the state.
The Anambra FRSC boss mentioned some of the intervention measures during the command’s Ember Months Operation to include: prompt response to emergency situations on the road, such as road mishaps and removal of obstructions.
He went further to disclose that the Command was partnering with the Anambra State Ministry of Health to provide ambulance services for prompt evacuation of injured persons in the event of emergency during the festive period, and the swift deployment of traffic personnel to flash points.
While assuring motorists and pedestrians that no FRSC Officer will ever sleep on the road as a result of gridlock, Kumapayi enjoined road users to always obey traffic rules and regulations.
The theme for this year’s 2020 Ember Month Campaign is “Safe, Stay Safe.”
In his remarks, Anambra State Commissioner for Transport, Mr Afam Mbanefo, who represented Governor Willie Obiano, urged drivers to desist from drinking and driving to avert road crashes.
He also appealed to passengers to always caution drivers anytime they discovered that they were driving against traffic rules and regulations..
On his part, the Managing Director of Anambra State Road Traffic Management Agency (ATMA), Mr. Patrick Obiefuna, said the Agency which is mandated to control traffic only on internal roads, had always been sensitizing motorists on strict obedience to traffic rules.
He warned motorists against one-way driving in order to avoid accidents.
