2023 Census: NPC Anambra Begins Training For Personnel On Computer Assisted Interview in Anambra
The National Population Commission (NPC) has commenced 5-day training of 84 field workers on Computer Assisted Personal Interview (CAPI) in Anambra State, in preparation for the 2023 National Population and Housing Census.
Declaring the training open in Awka, the NPC Federal Commissioner in Anambra State, Sir Chidi Ezeoke, urged participants to be serious in learning the skills they will use during households interviews, which include sending data to the server through synchronization, and the data analyzed and reports written and published.
The Federal Commissioner made participants understand that the training is key to the success of the 2023 Census, pointing out that after the training, they will train facilitators at the state level, aimed at making them efficient in conducting CAPI during the 2023 Census.
According to him, the benefits of CAPI are: backing up at different levels, unlimited space, consistency checks on data, easy to access, audio, image and video, as well as GPS coordinates among others for efficient documentation.
Sir Chidi further explained that the Commission is adopting the use of CAPI for the Census, which is an interviewing method in which the interviewer or respondent Utilises an Electronic device, a tablet, a smartphone or a computer to answer questions, usually in face to face interviews, used for long questionnaires as, according to him, the CAPI data can be analysed and report published faster.
Mr Ezeoke enumerated the benefits of CAPI to include, easy to carry about, the device can capture audio, images/ video and Global positioning system coordinates, Review Validation occurs immediately and corrections can be effected when necessary, while the completed interviews can be transmitted to the server immediately the interview is completed thereby reducing the risk of data loss, there is enough space to gather as much data as possible on a portable electronic device as opposed to carrying bags of interview forms in paper format among others.
He made it known that the 2023 Population and Housing Census is digitized and devoid of paper and pen personal Interview which is time consuming, while the results are not published until after a long time, and that the interviews can be conducted in wrong location with no way of tracing such errors.
He urged participants to take training seriously for a successful Census come 2023, as Federal Government President has invested hugely to ensure credible and verifiable census.
Contributing, NPC Director in Anambra State, Dr. Joachin Ulasi, disclosed that participants were selected from all the local government areas of the state.
Dr Ulasi assured that the analysis of the data can be carried out in time enough to write and share reports of the exercise and also publish the data, urging the facilitators to learn how to do it well as, according to him, they can not teach what they do not know.
Some of the facilitators who spoke at the event, Mr Ugochukwu Umeh, Okafor ifeoma and Ifeoma Mmodu, assured the organisers that they will make good use of the training to enable them teach other Enumerators accurately for the success of 2023 population and Housing Census.
