Canada’s colleges and universities are grappling with a financial crisis as cuts, consolidations, and reduced budgets take their toll. Earlier this year, Immigration Minister Marc Miller announced plans to limit international study permits to ease housing market pressures. However, this has severely impacted post-secondary institutions, particularly in southern Ontario, where tuition fees from international students form a crucial part of their budgets.
Experts like Alex Usher, president of Higher Education Strategy Associates, point to years of underfunding and cost-cutting as contributing factors. Institutions now face tough decisions, with further reductions likely if funding issues persist.
